People often complain about how much money Pro Athletes make. They say things like “Oh he just shows up on Sunday and gets a check for $5 million without doing anything or people believe it’s their natural talent that keeps them performing at a high level.” And on the surface that seems true. We as the spectators only see the finished product. What we don’t see is the months of endless hours of practice. The sacrifices the athletes make in their lifestyle off the field and the countless repetitions of the same play that we see happen on the field in a split second. When the Quarterback of a Pro-Football Team throws a pass, he has to know exactly how many seconds, exactly how many steps it will take for the wide receiver to get to the exact spot where he is supposed to be all while reading a defense that is trying to crush him. He has to know all of this because he needs to throw the ball before the receiver is even close to that mark. This knowledge and precision of execution don’t happen overnight. It happens through extreme preparedness.
Do you know that Olympic athletes often train 6-8 hours a day for six days a week for an average of four to eleven years to even stand a chance to make the Olympic team? This dedication is what it takes to have the opportunity to compete to be the best in the world.
What about Michael Jordan? He is considered the greatest basketball player of all-time. His stats and championships are impressive. I grew up watching him and seeing him dominate, but I took his performance for granted as a kid thinking that he was so naturally talented, which is so far from the truth of why he was so great. Jordan became better at playing than everyone else by first becoming better at practicing than everyone else. Jordan was known to be the first person to get to the gym and the last one to leave throughout his career. “If you do the work, you get rewarded. There are no shortcuts in life”, Michael Jordan.
Do you know the exact steps you need to take to connect with your client, provide them the service they need, deliver your product, or make the sale? What are you feeding your mind daily? Have you put in the time and the hours to practice that process until it is perfect? Or are you simply showing up on Sunday for the game expecting raw talent, or good luck to get you where you want to be?
Putting in the time to perfect your systems and processes can sometimes seem unimportant when your day-to-day is hectic and busy. If you are just trying to keep your head above water, you may wonder how you could spend a whole day just getting the processes down on paper. However, when you do put in that extra time, and iron out the kinks in your process, workflow, or customer journey, your productivity will increase and your time spent will become much more efficient. If you put in the practice, instead of dropping passes and having to do things over or losing clients, you’ll be making those passes on the first try, making the important sales, and delivering for your clients better products in less time.
